Bernard de Baileul began construction of a castle near Durham, overlook the River Tees. This was to become "Barnards Castle" the home of the Baliol family. Bernard's Castle was completed by Bernard's son of the same name.

Bernard I de Balliol was second of the Balliol barons of the twelfth-century. He succeeded to the lordships of his uncle, Gui I de Bailleul around 1130. Bernard appears to have founded the Caslte of Barnard in Durham County which was finish by his sons. By his wife, Maud, he fathered four sons, Enguerrand, Guy, Eustace and Bernard, as well as a daughter named Hawise.
