• Background Information. 732 Richard "the good," fourth duke of Normandy reigned during a time of prosperity for Normandy. His first wife was Judith, daughter of Geoffrey, Earl of Brittany. They had three sons, Richard, who was heir to his father and 5th Duke of Normandy, Robert "le Diable," the sixth Duke of Normandy and Willaim. Richard died in 1026 and by his third wife, Papia, he had a son named Mauger, who became the Archbishop of Rouen between 1037 and 1056. Richard, the second son, was the father of William the Conquer by his mistress, Arletta or Herleva. The youngest son, William became a monk at Fècamp.
