Richard II was the first of his family to be unambiguously referred to as duke of Normandy, a title that is also often given anachronistically to his three predecessors.

Richard, "the good," was the son and heir of Richard I, "the Fearless" and Gunnora. He succeeded his father as the Duke of Normandy. He forged a marriage alliance with Brittany by marrying his sister Hawise to Geoffrey I, Duke of Brittany and he married Geoffrey's sis, Judith of Brittany. He also tried to improve relatioships with England by marrying his other sister, Emma, to King Ethelred of England.

Ademar names Richard as son of "Richardus Rotomagensis" [Ademari Historiarum III.33, MGH SS IV, p. 131]. Guillaume of Jumièges names "Richardum...et Robertum atque Malgerium aliosque duos" as the sons of Richard and his wife "Gunnor ex nobilissima Danorum prosapia ortam" [Willelmi Gemmetencis Historiæ (Du Chesne, 1619), Liber IV, XVIII, p. 247]. Guillaume of Jumièges records the marriage of "dux Richardus" and "Goiffredum Britannorum comitem...sororem...Iudith" at "limina Archangeli Michaelis" [Willelmi Gemmetencis Historiæ (Du Chesne, 1619), Liber V, XIII, p. 255].

Richard married Judith de Bretagne, daughter of Conan "le Tort" Duc de Bretagne Comte de Rennes and Ermangarde de d’Anjou, about 1000 ^174,528.^,851 (Judith de Bretagne was born about 982 in France ⁵²⁸ and died on 28 Jun 1017 in France ⁸⁵¹.)
