• Background Information. 732
Richard was the eldest son of Sir John de Swynnerton and his first wife, Eleanor de Peshale. On Richard's marriage in about 1250, his father gave him the lands and manor of Peshale, which had passed to him by his marriage with Eleanor, and Richard assumed the surname of de Peshale. He took as his arms the Swynnerton Cross surmounted by the escutcheon of the arms of the old Corbeil family. Richard was knighted in 1298, and as was the custom for the time, knighthood was generally conferred as a reward for valour in the field of battle. It is likely that Sir Richard was knighted after the battle of Falkirk, 22 Jul 1298.

According to an entry in the Stafford Assize Roll of 56 Hen. III (1272), Sir Richard owned a [Staff. Hist. Coll., Vol. iii, Old Series, p. 18] Manor House at Peshale. Sir Richard died about 1300, leaving two sons, Adam and Richard. Both Adam and Richard appear in the Plea Rolls as "de Peshale" and "de Whethale."
