• Background Information: 252
José Mariano Chávez was the son of Cristóbal Chávez and María Josefa Núñez and he married María Manuela Romero, his second cousin, 2 Feb 1773. In 1790 they were living in the third Plaza of Los Chávez. His widowed mother, forty-nine, lived with them. He gave his age as thirty-four, and his trade that of a weaver. His wife was twenty-nine, and they had four boys (15-13-8-6) and two girls (14-10). By 1802 they had moved to the first Plaza of Los Chávez.

José Mariano died at Belén in May, 1829. Their known sons were: José Cristóbal, born 20 Feb 1774, who married Agustina Jurado at Tomé; Juan José, who married María Antonia Silva, 1 Apr 1810, at Belén; José Manuel, born at Los Chávez, 7 Mar 1794, who married Tomasa Gonzales at Cebolleta, 17 Aug 1817; José Antonio, who married María de la Luz Salaices; José de la Encarnación, 25 Mar 1796, at Los Chávez, who married María Rita Torres; Ambrosio, who married María Ynez Jaramillo at Cebolleta, 23 Apr 1815; and José Teodoro, who married María Josefa Gutiérrez at Cebolleta, 1 Apr 1818.

Their known daughters were: María Gertrudis, 11 Jan 1799, who married Juan Antonio Salazar, 16 Nov 1814, at Cebolleta; María Barbara, who married Francisco Antonio Romero at Los Chávez, 20 Aug 1798, and died 21 May 1831; and María Nicolasa, who married José Andrés Jaramillo at Cebolleta, 4 Sep 1814. This family of José Mariano Chávez and María Manuela Romero came to be known locally as "Los Chávez Mexicanos," from the fact that Mariano's mother was an outsider, an española of the City of Mexico whom his father had brought to New Mexico as a fourteen-year-old bride. As can be noted in their marriages, some of the children were pioneer settlers of the Cebolleta region, while some children of the son were pioneers of the north Mora country.
