Earl Patrick de Salisbury, second but surviving son and heir to his brother William, was a supporter of the Empress. Maud made him her Constable, and by her he was created Earl of Wiltshire and Salisbury sometime between 1143-1147. He was also sheriff of Wiltshire. He was with Henry, Duke of Normandy at Devizes on 13 Apr 1149, and again Jan-Aug 1153. He witnessed the treaty between Stephen and Henry at Westminster on 6 Nov 1153. After the accession of Henry II, he continued to act as sheriff, and was frequently at Court. In 1163, he was present at the first translation of Edward the Confessor.

Earl Patrick, in 1166, held 40 fees inherited from his father and fifteen more of his mother's maritagium. He was left in charge of the royal forces in Poitou. He also confirmed his father's gifts to Bradenstoke and was himself a benefactor to the priory of St. Denys, Southampton, as well as to the Templars.

Patrick's first wife was Maud, whose heritage is not known. His second wife was Ela, widow of William de Warenne, 3rd Earl of Surrey, and the daughter of William Talvas, Count of Ponthieu and Alençon and his wife Ela, daughter of Eudes, Duke of Burgundy. Patrick was killed in battle in Poitou by Geoffrey de Lusignan about 7 Apr 1168, and was buried in the Abbey of St. Hilaire in Poitiers. His widow died 10 Oct 1174.
