Charles Cawley's Medieval Lands, Elvira Menédez was the daughter of Hermenegildo Gutiérrez and Ermesinda Gatónez. Elvira married Ordoño II, son of Alfonso III and Jimena de Pamplona. "Her parentage and marriage are confirmed by a charter dated 21 Feb 897 which records that "Gondesindus prolis Erus et Adosinda" accepted as his wife Elvira´s sister "Enderquina conmento Pala filia dux Menemdus Gutierizi et Ermesinda iermana de domna Geluira regina que fuit mulier de Ordonius rex mater Ranemirus principe" [Portugaliæ Monumenta Historica, Diplomata et Chartæ, Vol. I (Lisbon, 1868), Fasc.
