• Background Information. 1236
Sir Walter Hungerford, K.G., of Farleigh Castle, Somerset, was summoned to Parliament as Baron Hungerford in 1462. He was the great-grandson of Walter de Hungerford who married Maud, daughter and heir of John de Heytesbury. The Hungerfords appear to have borne for their arms the coats of the heiresses with whom they married, thus we find Robert, the third Baron, quartering Heytesbury, Fitz-John, Hussey, Peverell, Botreaux and Molines. The Manor of Farleigh was purchased of Lord Burghersh by Sir Thomas Hungerford in 1396, and remained in possession of the family for 300 years.
