Giselbert's origin is unknown, but he is refered to "Giselbert count of the Maasgau" and a supporter of Charles II "le Chauve" King of the West Franks against his half brother, Emperor Lothaire. [ Scholz, B. W. with Rogers, B. (2000) Carolingian Chronicles: Royal Frankish Annals and Nithard's Histories (University of Michigan Press) ("Nithard"), III.2, p. 158.] Giselbert abducted the daughter of Emperor Lothaire I and his wife Emengarde de Tours. he Gesta Francorum records that "Gisalbertus, vassallus Karoli" abducted "filiam Hlotharii imperatoris" and took her to Aquitaine where they were married [Gesta quorundam regum Francorum 846, MGH SS I, p. 364.].
