• Background Information. 996
William de Glanville, Earl Glanville, Feudal Baron of Bromholm, Bacton, Paston, Keswick, Honing, Delham and Pancford

Sir Robert de Glanville was succeeded in these Lordships by William de Glanville, who in the reigns of William Rufus and Henry I, held a high position among the Norfolk and Suffolk Barons. His possessions in lands were extensive, as he not only founded a Priory but left his eldest son to inherit considerable property.

In the year 1113, he founded the Bromholm Priory in the county of Norfolk, and made it subordinate to the Cluniac MOnastery of Castle-Acre, and dedicated it to St. Andrew. He endowed it with lands here, and in his Lordships of Bacton and Ceswick. At the same place was also a priory of Black Monks dedicated to St. Sepulchre. Bartholomew de Glanville, the son and heir of the founder, confirmed his father's grants, and he increased their revenues.

Wlliam, Earl Glanvilled, died Dec. 2. He married Beatrix, daughter and coheiress with her sister of Sir William de Sackville, Lord of Mont Bures and Bracstead, Maryland, Essex (whose father Herbranus de Sackville, entered England at the Conquest ; Beatrix's uncle, Sir Robert de Sackville was ancestor to the Dukes of Dorset).
