María Montes Vigil was the daughter of Francisco Montes Vigil and María Jiménez de Anciso. They came to New Mexico with the Juan Páez Hurtado setters who came to recolonize along with don Diego de Vargas. After the death of her first husband, don Domingo Romero de Pedraza, María Montes Vigil married don José Tenorio, a native of the city of Zacatecas, where he was born about 1698, and arrived in Santa Fe in 1719 with thirty-four year old Miguel Carrillo. The couple were married 9 Feb 1722. According to the prenuptial investigation, María was 10 years older than her second husband. They had one child, Domingo, who died at a young age in Santa Fe. The couple did help Juana Teresa in raising her children by José Mariano Yturrieta. All of these children, except for Eduarda who was living with her first husband Luis Durán y Chaves, and their mother Juana Teresa are listed as living with don José Tenorio de Alba y Corona in Alburquerque in the Spanish Census of 1750. María Montes Vigil died on 22 May 1748.
