Gilbert de Meynell

The earliest known tenants in Thirkleby were the Meynells. Robert de Meynell held lands here, [Cur. Reg. R. East. 13 Hen. III, m. 4 d] and was succeeded by Gilbert, who gave lands at the close of the 12th century to Byland Abbey [Burton, loc. cit.]. Gilbert was succeeded by Stephen, whose name occurs in connexion with land here in 1224 [Cal. Pat. 1216'9625, p. 488] and 1237 [Feet of F. Yorks. 21 Hen. III, no. 10]. Walter de Meynell was party to a fine as to land here in 1240 [Ibid. 24 Hen. III, no. 103].

Robert de Meynell gave 1 carucate of land here to his niece Cecily as dower on her marriage with Walter son of Thomas de Thirkleby [Cur. Reg. R. East. 13 Hen. III, m. 4 d]. Walter may possibly have left co-heirs, for in 1272 John de Staveley and Sybil [Feet of F. Yorks. 56 Hen. III, no. 28] his wife granted messuages and lands in Thirkleby to Roger de Burton, lord of West Harlsey, whose wife Joan had herself perhaps added to Roger's possessions here [Feet of F. Yorks. 8 Edw. I, no. 110].
