• Background Information. 183
Robert Pantulf was heir to his father, William Pantulf's, English estates. Robert acquired some notoriety while his father was still alive. Soon after the death of King William I, a Nunnery at Caen was pillaged, and Robert Pantulf's name figures among the Marauders. In about 1130, there was a grant to Shrewbury Abbey by William Constable of Chester. The first witness to this charter was Robert Pantulf, and the last witness is Ivo Pantulf. Robert Pantulf had both a brother and a son named Ivo, so it is hard to tell which of the two succeeded him.
