According to Origins of New Mexico Families, by Ángel Chávez, Juan de Gamboa was the father of Petronial de Gamboa who was either raped or seduced by Governor López Mendizábal. Petronila's mother was María Pacheco.

Petronila Gamboa married Andrés Ramírez del Prado who died before 1680. Their son, Antonio de Gamboa, was described as eighteen years old and single in 1681. Antonio de Gamboa married Lucía de Tapia four years later.
