Maldred was probably the brother of Duncan, King of Scotland, 1034-40, who was son of Crinán, Abbot of Dunkeld, which Crinán is conjectured to be the same as Crinán Tein, father of this Maldred. This made his son Gospatric a cousin to the Scottish and English Kings.

Meldred was a younger son of Abbot Crinan, and his wife was a daughter of Earl Uchtred, by his third wife Ælfgifu, daughter of King Æthelred II, and Earl Uchtre was killed in 1016. Meldred was likeny born shortly before is father's death, about 1072-75.
