Juan de Pantoja was originally from Medellín, Spain. He was regidor of Pátzcuro, which was later named Ciudad Michoacán. He married Catalina de Medina, the daughter of Domingo de Medina, also one of the early settlers of Michoacán.

• Background Information:
"December 20, 1538: Councilor of the city of Pátzcuaro. Juan Pantoja says that he is from Mechoacán and a native of Medellín, and the legitimate son of Pedro Pantoja and Catalina Rodríguez; and that twenty-six years ago he moved to this New Spain, which was before this city (Pátzcuaro) was conquered. After it was conquered, he went with Xriptóual Dolid to the conquest of Mechoacán. He has been married for thirteen years, and has six daughters and two sons; and that it was found in the last pacification of the New Galicia, and has encomienda the town of Guacana on 10 Jan 1577. Declaration of Gonzalo Hernández, conqueror of New Spain and resident of Mexico City, he has known the said Juan de Pantoja for more than forty years and that he knows that he was found in the conquest of this city of Mexico. Hernández Nieto conqueror has told this witness... the said Pantoja and his uncle had come to the said conquest thirty days before the land was won and this witness also knows from having told him that the said Juan Pantoja was found in the conquests of Colima and Zacatula and other parts. Juan Pantoja is a gentleman and a well-known son and daughter because he was like that and his uncle said that he came with him.

Statement from other witnesses: the town of Aguacana [Huacana] was entrusted to him in the name of His Majesty. He was married and veiled, according to the order of the Holy Mother Church, to Catalina de Medina, daughter of Domingo de Medina, a very old settler."
