• Background Information. 763
The Talbots of Bashall are recognized by genealogists as a branch of the high connected Norman stock, which has given to the peerage the earldoms of Shrewsbury and Talbot. Edmund de Lacy, who died in 1257, gave Thomas Talbot the land of Hudresfeld, It is believed that this Thomas Talbot was also given Bashall (orginally Beckshalgh) by Edmund de Lacy. Edmund, the king's son, Earl of Lancaster, was endowed with the lands taken from Edmund de Lacy, and this Edmund, the son of the King, again granted Bashall to this Thomas Talbot. Thomas died in the third of Edward I, and was succeeded by his son Edmund.

• Background Information. 934
Thomas Talbot was appointed governor of Clitheroe Castle by Edmund de Lacy, second Earl of Lincoln, during the reign of Henry III [Vist. of York. 1666, p. 237] About 1253, Lacy granted to Thomas, lands in Huddersfield. Lacy also gave him the gift of the manor of Bashall in Mitton, in fee farm to him and his heirs forever, at a yearly rent of £8-10-7. This grant was later confimed by the King "in capite," and Bashall became the main seat of this branch of Talbots. Thomas Talbot died about 2 Edward I (1274), leaving his widow Martha. His children were Edmund, b. abt 1260, son and heir; Robert, Thomas and Giles.
