Robert Talebot was born about 1170, and succeeded his brother Roger as Lord of Gainsborough before 8 John (1207) [Visitation of Yorkshire, 1666, pp. 236 & 242, note f; Nova Oblata pro. com Linc.; 8 John] In 1215, he was granted by King John the land os Hugh Pincerni in Arethorpe and Skaleberg in Craven, Yorkshire, and also the lands in Wulrickby, Lincolnshire, formerly of Robert de Ropesly, a rebel [Close Rolls, 17 John, pt. I, m. 12]. Before 1216, he was given lands in Brackenbury in Craven by Hugh de Lacy [Patent Rolls, 18 John, m. 5] Later he was in the service of Hugh de Lacy, Earl of Ulster in Ireland, by whom he was granted extensive estates there. In 1225, the lands of Robert Talebot in Ulster were seized by the King and given to the Bishop of Durham, the said Robert having served under his lord Hugh de Lacy in an insurrection against the King. He was pardoned and his lands restored to him after payment of a fine of £100.

He married Ermintrude, daughter and co-heir of Robert de Ferrers, son of Walcheline de Ferrers, a younger son of the Earl of Derby. She brought to her husband the manor of Eggington in Derbyshire [Pleadings in the Exchequer Rolls, 13 Henry III, Rot. 13].

The children of Ermintrude and Robert were:
William, son and heir, lived in Normandy where he died 26 Heny III (1242) leaving by Alice, his wife, daughter and sole heiress, Joanna Talebot who married Robert son of William de Stuteville.
John, received lands in Thorpe from his uncle Sylvester Talebot. He succeeded his brother as Lord of Gainsborough. He died without heirs.
Gerard, succeeded his brother as Lord of Gainsborough. He died in in 1258, and was succeeded by his son, richard Talebot.
Robert, b. about 1205, youngest son.
