Richard Talebot was the ancestor of the house of Talbot. In the Domesday Book, he held a manor in Battesden, Defordshire, of eight carucates of arable land and an equal amount of meadow as undertenant to Walter Gifford, feudal Earl of Buckingham, and proprietor of 107 lordships in various parts of England. A carucate was equal to about 90 acres, so the estate occupied by Richard Talebot comprised about 1500 acres.

Richard married a daughter of Hugh de Gournay by Basilia, daughter of Gerard Flaitel, and sister of Gerard de Gournay, feudal Baron of Yarmouth. Richard had at least two sons, Geoffrey and Hugh. Hugh was the ancestor of the Talbots, Earls of Shrewsbury.
