• Background Information. 151
Sir John Scot of Calverley
, eldest son of Walter Scot was likely born about 1310, and was married before 1336. He first occurs as a witness to a charter of his uncle's about 1325 and attested as a witness to another in 1328. In Jan 1336, settlements were made of his brothers Walter and William that the property given to them for their lives was to go to John son of Walter and Agnes. In charters, dated 1334 and 1345, which have to do with the sisters of his Uncle's wife, he is called "John Scot of Calverley." As "John lord of Calverley," he attests to a few charters, then as "John de Calverley" on another charter around the same date. He must have been knighted before Sep 1346 because at this time he is referred to "Sir John de Calverley."

In 1346, there was a resettlement of the family property. Sir John had a life estate, whith the remainder going to his sons John, Walter and Richard, and the male heirs of their bodies successively. His daughter Isabel is named on a charter dated 26 Edward III (1352/53), when he settles property in Pudsey on Willaim Atwell and his wife Isabel. In 1357 there is a second marriage settlement, this time for Sir John's second son Walter and Margery daughter of John de Dyneley and their heirs.

Sir John was dead before May 1361. His widow Agnes gives a receipt for a rent due to her from the Burley property at this time. The person paying her was John de Dyneley, likely the father of Margery, as well a being the executor of Sir John de Calverley's will.
