Uchtred, usually styled as "Uchtred, son of Fergus," because he shared the rule of Galloway with his brother Gilbert. He was the elder son of Fergus. His name appears in writs as witnesses to royal charters both before and after his father's death. His father was obliged to send him to the Scottish court as a hostage after Fergus had been involved in an insurrection against the king.

Uchtred was a benefactor of the church, was founder of a nunnery at Lincluden, and gifted various churches to Holyrood and Holmcultram abbeys. He granted some land in Troqueer to the hospital of St. Peter of York, by writ, dated between 1158 - 1167. Uchtred remained peaceful until 1175, and he and his followers accompanied their monarch on his march into England. When William, King of Scotland, was taken prisoner by the English, Uchtred and his brother Gilbert seized the royal castles. The brothers quarrelled, and Gilbert had Uchtred killed on 22 Sep 1147, in his house in Loch Fergus, by a party under Gilbert's son, Malcolm.
