bullet  General Notes:

The History of the County Palatine and Duchy of Lancaster, Vol. 2, p. 423, "Pedigree of Radclyffe or Radcliffe, of Radcliffe Tower," has Elena, daughter of Richard de Radclyffe, High Sheriff of Lancashire and his wife Isabella, daughter and heir of Pleasington, and sister to Thomas Radclyffe, marring, as her third husband, Sir Robert Urswick.

I believe that Elena married the older Robert Urswick. All the records of Robert Urswick seem to confuse father with his son Sir Robert Urswick. Elena may be married to either father or son. The same is true with Margaret Southworth, but I've found more references for Sir Robert, son of Robert, being married to Margaret Southworth.

"The vaccary of Lowgill, with which Ivah, formerly Ivetho or Ivo, seems to have been joined, was held by a younger branch of the Tatham family, and passed to Urswick and Kirkby of Upper Rawcliffe. (fn. 37) Robert de Urswick in 1376 obtained a grant of free warren for his demesne lands in Tatham, Cansfield and Upper Rawcliffe. [*]

* Deeds concerning it are in Dods. MSS. cxlix. John son of Sir John de Tatham gave his brother Robert the vaccary called Lowgill; [fol. 91b] Sarah widow of Sir John in 1319 released to Robert de Tatham her son all her right (by dower) in the same [ibid]. Edmund de Dacre granted for life to Robert de Tatham in 1323-4 a vaccary in Tatham Fell (in monte de Tatham) called Ewardsclough, as it was inclosed and dyked [fol. 91]. Afterwards he released all his right in it [fol. 92]. Robert de Tatham twenty years later gave Lowgill to John de Urswick, rector of Tatham, probably as trustee [ibid]. At the same time he gave Ewardsclough to his daughter Sarah and her issue [ibid]. She married Adam de Urswick (d. 1361), and so the inheritance in Tatham, Hornby, Cantsfield, Wray, Kellet, &c., descended to Kirkby. In 1334 Isabel widow of Adam de Urswick claimed dower in a messuage in Tatham against John de Roeburndale [De Banco R. 297, m. 219 d]. John son of Roger Kirkby of Upper Rawcliffe held land in Tatham in 1438 in right of his wife Ellen daughter of Sir Robert de Urswick and Margaret his wife [Towneley MS. C 8, 13, K 37. See also Final Conc. iii, 133].

Victoria County History, A History of the County of Lancaster, Volume 7, Townships: Upper Rawcliffe and Tarnacre, pp. 267-273

• Background Information: 746
Sir Robert Urswick obtained the Manor of Upper Rawcliffe or Uprawcliffe, by marriage with Helen, daughter of Sir William Southworth (1373), who had inherited from the Couplands, and it remained with the Urswicks until two generations later, when it passed by marriage to the Kirbys of Kirkby. Rawcliffe, as it is now called, is situated on the north side of the river Wyre, in the same towhsip as the village of St. Michaels.

Sir Robert also held, by power of attorney from Margaret, daughter of William Hornby (afterwards married to his son Robert), an estate called Asthrope, or East Thorpe, in Lincoln (1382). He was also guardian (1397) of Joan, daughter of Roger Hertforth of Badsworth (who married his other son Thomas).

Sir Robert Urswick, as Knight of the Shire, was an instance of long and continous service, almost unexampled. He served in parliament:
"At Westminster," 24 Apr 1379, Nicholas de Haryngton and Robert de Urcewyk.
16 Jan 1380, name of the first Knight illegible, and Thomas de Southworth, Robert Urswick's brother in law.

5 Nov 1380
16 Sep 1381, prorogue to 3 Nov, William Atherton and Robertus de Urcewyk
6 Oct 1382, Johannes Assheton and Robertus Ursewyk
26 Oct 1385, Robertus Urswyk and Thomad de Radclife
10 Nov 1386, Nicholas de Haveryngton or Haryngton and another.
12 Nov, 1390, Robertus de Ursewyk and Johannes de Croft
3 Nov 1391, Robertus de Urswyk and Robertus de Worbesley
20 Jan 1393, Robertus de Ursewyk and Rodulphus de Ipré
27 Jan 1394, Robertus de Urswyk and Thomas Gerard
27 Jan 1395, Robertus de Urswyk and Thomas de Radeclif
22 Jan 1397, Robertus de Urswyk and Ricardus Molineux
17 Sep 1397, prorogued to 27 Jan 1398, at Shrewsbury, (name illegible) and Adulphus de Radeclyf
6 Oct 1399, Robertus de Urswyk and Henricus de Hoghton
27 Oct 1400, at York, and prorogued to 20 Jan 1401, at Wesminister, Robertus de Urswyk and Nicholas de Atherton.

In the post-mortem Inquisition, which followed his death, refers to Robert, Knight of Parliament, and it follows that he must have married twice. His second wife was named Joan, and he must have died in harness; for we find him sitting in the House in Jan 1401, and dying in Sep of the same year 66.
