• Background Information. 141
Amauri de St. Amand
was in the King's service, March 1216/7, when he had a grant of the vill of Clafford, Hants, for his maintenance. This was followed by similar grants, such as one in 1222, of 1/2 of the manor of Liskear, Cornwall. He was probably 3rd son of ___ de St. Amand, by ___, daughter of Walter de Verdon, Sheriff of Essex and Herts, 1218-20, and in her issue, coheir of her brother Ralph, from whom Amauri inherited an estate at Bloxham, Oxon.

In 1226 Amaruri de St. Amand was serving in Ireland, where he also received grants of land. In 1230 he fought in Henry's expedition overseas, and in 1231 he was joint constable of castles in Pembroke, and joint negotiator of a truce with Llewelyn. In 1232, he was a joint Keeper of St. James de Beuvron (La Manche), and in January 1232/3, the King's messenger to the Duke of Brittany. By July of that year he was made a knight. Later in 1233, he was on official service in the Marches of Wales. He was the King's Steward or joint Steward, 1233, certainly until 1240. Again, in January 1233/4, he was the joint Constable of the Marches, and in May, Keeper of Hereford, &c., acting as sheriff until I240. He was keeper of St. Briavel, &c., June 1234, with renewals until his death. In July, he was in joint control of the King's expenditure in Brittany. In June 1239 he was one of the nine godfathers of Prince Edward.

He married, 1st,_______, and, 2nd, between July 1214 and Dec. 1222, as her 5th husband, Iseult, daughter of William Pantulf of Breedon, Leics (who died 1194), by Joan, daughter of Piers de Goldington and Eve his wife, and (perhaps after the death s.p. of a brother) her father's coheir and ultimately heir. He died between Easter and September 1241, on the journey to the Holy Land on which he set out in 1240, with Simon de Montfort, as followers of Richard, Earl of Cornwall.
