"Todd A. Farmerie" <taf2@PO.CWRU.EDU>, posting to soc.genealogy.medieval on 16 Jan 1997:
Subject: Cordoba Times headline: Christian princess runs off cousin, how in-Sultan!: "I have come across an article which addresses in great detail the chronology of the Arista dynasty of Navarre:
"Sanches Albornoz, Claudio. Problemas de la Historia Navarra del Siglo IX. in Cuadernos de Historia de Espana, 25:5-82.
Among other clarifications (for instance, the first Inigo married the widow of Muza ben Fortun ben Qasi, rather than his Inigo's widow marrying Muza) he makes a strong argument for Oneca leaving the future Sultan for her first cousin.
There is, however, more to it than meets the eye. Following a the hands of Cordoba, Garcia Iniguez, King of Navarre saw his adult son a hostage of the muslims. Fortun Garces was kept in Cordoba for 30 years, long after his father died, before returning to find his kingdom all but ruled by the upstart Jimenez clan (which would eventually supplant the Aristas). It was presumably at the time of his return that daughter Oneca left Abdallah, son of her father's captor, to return to their homeland in Pamplona, marrying her cousin Aznar (son of Fortun's younger brother Sancho). This may have been intended to strengthen the family, but [the]dynasty died with Fortun. Still, their blood continued in Oneca's daughter Toda, who as Queen and then Queen-Mother (and Queen-Grandmother) played a dominant role in Iberian politics for 50 years."

Oneca is referred to as the daughter of King Fortún in the Codex de Roda, which also names her husband Aznar Sánchez. According to the Codex de Roda, she later married "regi Abdella et genuit Mahomat iben Abdella", but this is unsustainable chronologically given the birth of her son Muhammad in 864. ~Codex de Roda, c. 6, quoted in Settipani (2004), p. 99

She married a second husband after returning from Córdoba in 880 with her father who had just been released from captivity. ~Settipani (2004), p. 104

Her first husband was (863, repudiated before 880) Abd Alllah, son of Muhammad Emir of Córdoba (-16 Oct 912). He succeeded his brother in 888 as Abd allah I Emir of Córdoba.

Her second husband (880) was her first cousin, Aznar Sánchez de Larraún, son of Sancho García de Pamplona & his wife.

Oneca married Azanar Sánchez de Larraún, son of Sancho García de Navarra and Unknown, about 880. (Azanar Sánchez de Larraún was born about 860 in Iberian Peninsula.)

• Family Background Information: Oneca and Aznar Sánchez were first cousins.
