William de Withington

Gospatrick de Chorlton had a despute, between 1180 and 1200, with William, son of Wulfric de Withington, ancestor of the Hathersage family, which it was decided to settle by wager of battle. Gospatrick lost the wager, and with it the four oxgangs of land which had been the subject of the disput. In 1212, William de Withington's son, Matthew de Hathersage, held these four oxganges.

"Matthew son of William, and Roger, son of William, hold the fee of one knight of Robert Gredle in Wythinton of ancient time, and ought to find j. judge for the King (et debunt invenire j. Judicem domino Regi)."

The first recorded lord of Withington under the Grelleys was William, son of Wulfrith de Withinton, who deraigned four bovates in Chorlton-upon-Medlock by wager of battle against Gospatric de Chorleton. He was the father of Matthew de Hathersage, and Roger, his brother who held this fee at the date of the inquest. Part of their service consisted in finding a doomsman or judge to do suit at the King's hundred court of Salford, and at Greeley's court baron of Manchester.
