Richard Fitz Alan, Earl of Arundel, and Earl of Surrey, son and heir, by 2nd wife, born in abt 1346. He was bearer of the Crown at the coronation of Richard II, 16 Jul 1377, was a member of the Council, and was made Admiral of the West and South, 1377, an subsequently, 1386, of all England.

Sir Richard fitz Alan was a member of the Knight of the Garter, distinguished himself in the French Wars, and "won a brilliant naval victory over the French, Spanish, & Flemish fleets off Margate in 24 Mar 1387. He was made Governor of Brest in 1388, being one of the five Lords Appellant in the Parliament of that year. Together with the Duke of Gloucester, he later took an active part in the opposition to King Richard, who, in 1388, was entirely in that Duke's power. In 1394, he obtained a pardon for all political offences, but was treacherously seized, 12 Jul 1397, tried at Westminster, and beheaded at Cheapside on 21 September 1397.

Sir Richard Fitz Alan married by contract dated 28 Sep 1359, with Papal dispensation given the same month, Elizabeth, daughter of William Bohun, Earl of Northampton, by Elizabeth, daughter of Bartholomew Badlesmere. She died 3 Apr 1385, and was buried at Lewes.

Sir Richard Fitz Alan married 2nd, without Royal license, for which he was fined 500 marks, 15 Aug 1390, Philippe, widow of John Hastings, and daughter of Edmund Mortimer, Earl of March, by Philippe, daughter and heir of Lionel, Duke of Clarence.

Sir Richard died 21 Sep 1397. He was buried at Augustin Friars', in Bread Street, London, and, having been attainted, all his honors were forfeited. Will dated 4 Mar 1392/3. His widow (by whom he had no issue) was born 21 Nov 1375, at Ludlow, married 3rd, after Apr 1398, Thomas Poynings, Lord St. John of Basing, and died 24 Sep 1401, at Halnaker, Sussex, being buried at Boxgrove.

They were the parents of Elizabeth who married Thomas de Mowbray & Sir Robert Goushill, of Hoveringham, Notts, and Alice who married John Cherleton, Lord of Cherleton
