Cristóbal de Tafoya Altamirano came to New Mexico after the reconquest inm 1695, with his brother Juan. Another brother, Antonio, also came to settle in New Mexico.

He was thirty-four years old when he left El Paso del Norte for New Mexico with his brother Antonio early in 1695. They were both soldiers, born in El Real de Talpujagua. Cristóbal married Ysabel de Herrera in 1698.

In 1718, he made his last will at Santa Cruz, in ehich he named his parents and birthplace. He declared two legitimate children by Isabel de Herrera: Juan and Antonio; and also two natural daughters; Antonia Tofoya Jaramillo, wife of Sebastián Varela, and Tertrudis Tafoya Ruiz. He also had reared a nephew, Cristábal, son of his brother Antonio. He was still living the following year when he brought suit against Diego Archuleta for beating his wife Isabel.

His two sons married into the Juan Gonzáles Bas family of Alamenda. Juan, age twenty-two, married Antonia Gonzáles in 1716, and Antonio, born 16 May 1700 married her sister Prudencia in 1722.

Cristóbal Tafolla declares himself to be a native of Real de Minas of "Talpojuangun," and son of Juan de Tafolla and Felipa Faguada de Uloa, and a resident of the Kingdom of New Mexico & citizen of the villa Nueva de Santa Cruz. He names his wife to be Ysabel de Herrea, who is a native of New Mexico, and his two legitimate children Juan de Tafolla and Antonio Tafolla. He also states that he has two natural daughters, Antonia Tafolla Jaramillo, married to Sevestian Barela and Gertrudes de Tafolla Ruiz.
