During the reign of Richard I, a Simon de Grubhead, who has been named in the account of Lathom, gave Scarisbrick to his brother Gilbert. As Gilbert de Scarisbrick, this brother made a grant of land in his manor to Cockersand Abbey. Some forty years later Richard son of Robert de Lathom gave, or confirmed, to Walter de Scarisbrick, who was son of Gilbert, 'Harleton and Scarisbrick, which Simon de Grubhead formerly gave to Gilbert his brother by charter, rendering the ancient farm, viz. 8 shillings of silver at Martinmas.'

Gilbert de Scarisbrick was lord of Scrisbrick and Hurleton under the Lathoms, and died before 1246. He was the father of Walter. Gilbert made a grant in frankalmoign of a toft in Scarisbrick to the cannons of Cockersand.
