Richard, son of John de Balderston and Roesia de Ros, held the manor of Balderston in 1361 of the lord of Osbalderston by the service of 4s. 3d. yearly. Richard likely became of age towards the end of 1369. He seems to have taken up arms at an early age since in 1372, he is described as 'chivaler' in a demise made to him by Thomas de Southworth. He had licensce in 1374 for an oratory at Balderston for three years. Richard married Agnes and died about the end of the year 1382. Agnes married a second time, sometime before 1405, John Savile of Elland, and was alive in 1411.
