María came to New Mexico with her family as a member of the second wave of 65 settlers that came to New Mexico in 1600.

María de Zamora was a Mexican Indian native of the Barrio de San Sebastián in Mexico City, near the acequia of the city. She moved with her parents to Oaxaca when she was seven years old. Later her family relocated to the Pueblo of Tezcuco, and indigenous community that developed into a multethnic community. This is where she married Bartolomé Montoya, a native of Catillana in the province of Andalucía.

María married Bartolomé de Montoya, son of Francisco Montoya and Unknown, in Tezcoco, Nueva España. (Bartolomé de Montoya was born in 1572 in Cantillana, Castilla, España ²⁵² and died after 5 Mar 1609 in Nuevo Méjico, Nueva España ²⁵².)
