He was the Alcalde Mayor of the town of Zamora. Alcaldes were local officials who acted as judges to settle disputes. This is a very honorable position in New Spain, and especially New Mexico at the time.

Juan married Francisca Ochoa Garibay, daughter of Diego Ochoa Garibay and Juana Nuñez de Sotomayor, on 11 Mar 1613 in Zamora, Michoacán, Nueva España. (Francisca Ochoa Garibay was born before 1598 and was christened in Zamora, Michoacán, Nueva España ²⁵⁰.)
