The castle of Oswestry, so. Salop, was obtained along with an extensive fief in shropshire, early in the reign of Henry I by Alan Fitz Fleald, a Brenton, whose son and heir was William Fitz Alan, of Oswestry. This William died in 1160 and was succeeded by his son of the same name.

William, son of William Fitz Alan, had livery of his Shropshire Barony about 1175. About this time, he married a daughter of Hugh de Lacy of Ludlow and Ewyas. Lacy's daughter was probably a mere infant at the time her father made the marriage contract.

William Fitz Alan, the younger, was at the Court of King Richard at Westminister on 24 Jan 1190. He also appears on 22 Nov 1192 in the company with Bishop Hugh de Novant at Buildwar. On 9 Nov 1198, he was with King Richard at Roche Andely. In 1199, he paid a fine of 60 merks so that he might memain in England rather than crossing the seas with King John. His name again appears on 24 Dec 1205 delivering two catzuros to King John. A Writ of 11 Feb 1206, shows William fitz Allan rendering up, by order of the King, certain Welsh hostages, whom he had in keeping, and who were to be entrusted to William de Cantilupe, Walter de Clifford, and another.

William Fitz Alan, the younger, died in 1210, and it likely that he was buried at Haughmond Abbey. In the Chartulary of the House there is a Deed whereby "William, son of William fitz Alan, confirmed, for the souls of himself, his ancestors, and his heirs, togehter with his body, to that Abbey, all the land he had in Downton. He further gave with his body, all his wook, lying between the road, which led from the Abbey towards Shawbury, and the wood of Uffington." This Deed was attested to by Sir Huctrad, Abbot of Buildwas, Sir Ralph, Abbot of Lilleshull, John le Strange, Robert Corbet, Hugh Pantulf, Reiner de Lee, Hugh de Beccheberi, and Warner de Wililey.

At his death in 1210, William Fitz Alan, the younger, left two sons, William and John, as well as two daughters Agnes and Petronilla. Agnes Fitz Alan married Phillip, son of Simon de Kime. Petronilla Fitz Alan, was the second wife of Walter de Dunstanvill of Idsall in April 1213.
