The Southworth family, took its name from the estate of Southworth belonging to the Barony of Newton. The two manors, Southworth and Croft were classed together for parochial purposes and were often named together. Many of its memebers served their country in war or peace, being knights banneret or knights of the shire. To Gilbert, son of Gilbert de Southworth, succeeded William de Southworth, whose name is on a document as witness in 1292 [45, Vol. XL, pp. 157-8].
