Matthew de Vilars became the lord of Warrington upon the death of his father Pagan de Vilars. He appears in records as a benefactor of Fiskerton or Furgatorio, a religious house in Nottinghampshire founded by Ralph Daincourt in about 1136. It was likely a few years after 1144 that Mathew de Vilars made the charter of his gift. In the charter he name some of his family members. ". . . with the consent of my heirs, Robert fitz Helgod, and Beatrix my daughter, and my brothers Thomas and William de Vilars," and "Be it known unto all persons, both present and to come, that Mathew de Vylars and his brothers, William and Alan and Thomas, have granted and by this present charter . . ." In 14 Henry II (1167), the King confirmed all the gifts and the charter by Matthew de Vilars.
