Matthew Brckwith came from Kenilworth, England, to Windsor, Conn., and removed to Saybrook, Conn., about 1639; he was one of the first magistrates. He had charge of Governor Fenwick's affairs when the latter left the Colony.

He had a grant of a large tract of land on which he settled, in Blackhall, a pleasant part of Old Lyme, Conn., which has now been the seat of the Griswold family for two and a half centuries (1881).

Matthew married in 1641 in Hartfort, Connecticut.
