Miguel Montoya was the son of Salvador Montoya and Manuela García de la Riva. On 9 Apr 1729, he married Rosa Baca, widow of José de Silva, April 9, 1729. She died the following year on 15 Ap 1730, during birth to her daughter, Gertrudis, who was baptized on 15 May 1730. Gertrudis eventually would marry Juan Miguel Alvarez del Castillo.

Miguel married, as he second wife, Lucía Durán y Chávez on 21 Mar 1734. They had the following children:

• Miguel, who married Joaquina Montes Vigil in 1771
• Francisco, who married Juliana Montes Vigil in 1772 at El Puesto del Cerro Cabezón
• Pedro, who married Juana Mirabal in 1779
• Juan Cristóbal, who married Luisa Padilla in 1785
