Johannes (Hans) Hagmann was born at Muttersholtz in Alsace and baptized 29 November 1663. He lived at Ibersheim most of his life and died there before 1738.

The name of his wife is unknown, but she could have been a daughter of Heinrich Gochenauer of Ibersheim.

Baptized as Johannes, he was listed as Hans in the Mennonite census of Ibersheim in 1685. At that time, he was still unmarried and head of the family, which included his two younger brothers, Ulrich and Peter, and two unidentified sisters. His older brother, Hans Jacob, was already married and living elsewhere. Regarding the identity of his wife, the most likely possibility is that she was a daughter of Heinrich Gochenauer of Ibersheim, who had eight children in the same age category as the Hagmanns in 1685.

Hans is the ancestor of most of the several generations of the Hackmans at Ibersheim, of many of the Hackmans who later lived in Lancaster and York Counties in Pennsylvania, and of the Hockmans of the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia.
