the earliest record of a member of this family can be found in the Pipe Roll of 1196/6. There was a claim of Hugh Putreel to a fourth part of the fee of two knights in Barton and Worsley. [Lanc. Pipe Roll 94]. Richard de Worsley, in 1203, was defending his right to twenty acres of wood in Worsley. Richard is recorded as "Richard son of Elias" om 1206 when he gave a mark for a write. Six years later he is recorded holding a plough-land of Gilbert de Notton and his wife Edith de Barton, half of the land being in Worsley.
