Juana de Apodaca had been captured by Indians when she was a little girl. She had been captivity for twelves years when she and her little girl (María) rejoined the Spanish settlers. María was baptized and Don Diego de Vargas was her padrino (godfather).

Juana de Apodaca, alias Azate and Maese, was the natural duaghter of Catalina Montoña by Spanish born father Domingo de Arzate.
