The Montebegons had vast holding from the Conqueror, and on the creation of the Honor of Lancaster by Henry I, they were ceded further lands, held of Honor by the service of eight knights. In 1149, Stephen temporarily resigned as the Earl of Chester his lands between Ribble and the Mersey, the Montbegon holding were exempted from the grant, in a desire to retain the favor of this most powerful baron. Besides the castle of Hornby, with its demesne lands, they held Croston-cum-membris, and Tottington-cum-membris, the latter comprising Tottington Higher End and Lower End, Musbury, Walmerslet-with-Shuttleworth, Bury, Elton, Birtle-cum-Bamford, Ainsworth, Great Lever, Heap, Pilworth, Hopwood, Thornham, Middleton, Tonge, Alkrington and Chadderton, in all assesed as twelve carucates and held by the service of two knights.

In the spring of 1192, Count of Mortain, set up his court at Lancaster in open opposition to the hated Longchamp, whom King Richard had appointed Justiciar during his absence in the Holy Land. Amongst those who were foremost to John's support was Roger de Montbegon, the last of his great line. he was accompanied by his tenants and vassals, including William Radciff and Adam de Bury, the later the son of Alice de Montbegon. The return of Richard to his realm in the following year caused the collapse of the rebellion, and Roger, with his feudatories, submitted to the Kind. They received the royal pardon, and compounded for their forfeiture of their estates. Roger was fined 500 marks, and Radciff and Bury paid 5 marks apiece.

Cecilia married William Radcliffe, son of Henry Radcliffe and Unknown. (William Radcliffe was born in Radcliffe, Lancashire, England and died in 1220 in Radcliffe, Lancashire, England 745.)
