The name Sherman was written as Shearman, Shereman, Shirman and Sharman in Enlgand. It was of English origin, and came from the trade or occupation of wool worker or maker of wollen cloth. The shearer clipped the sheep and the shearman or sherman made the wool into cloth and was also known as clothier or woolen manufacturer.

The Sherman family, the ancestors of the Shermans who migrated to New England, are most likely from Yaxley, in Suffolk, and later of Dedham, in Essex.

Thomas Sherman of Diss, Norfolk and Yaxley, Suffork, England married Agnes. He died in 1493. His will is in Latin and dated 4 Nov 1492 and was proved 4 Apr 1493 [Consistory court, Norwich, Awbrye 130] In his will he mentions his son John, his daughter Agnes, her husband John Clerk and grandson Thomas Clerk, and his grandson Thomas Sherman. His son John Sherman and son-in-law, John Clerk were the executors of his will.
