• Background Information. 260
Robert Fitz Hugh, the eldest son and heir of Hugh Fitz Eon, held in 1166, twenty-five knights' fees of the new feoffment. He granted a new site for Kirkstead Abbey on the Witham, made a gift to the Knights Templars and witnessed a charter granted to Rievaulx Abbey. He married Isabel, or Elizabeth, daughter of William Fitz Walter (a.k.a William de Welles), of Wells and Claxby, Norfolk, by a sister of Gilbert de Gaunt, earl of Lincoln, and daughter of Walter de Gaunt. Robert Fitz Hugh was dead in 1185, when his widow was said to be 50 years of age. In 1202 she held lands (? her maritagium) worth £30, being then styled "Ysabel de Kandelesbi"; and in 1212 she held land in Candlesby in dower.

In a grant to Kirkstead Abbey, he calls himself "Robert, son of Hugh, son of Eudo de Tateshala, and in another document, Robert son of Hugh de Tadeshal. He is also called Robert son of Hugh of West Witton, Yorkshire. Robert and Isabel had at least six sons: Robert; Andrew; William; another William of Denton, Lincolnshire; Robert; and Water, who had a son also named Walter. There has been a suggestion that Hugh and Sir Walter were natural or illegitimate sons of Hugh.
