Guillaume de Forcalquier succeeded his brother as Comte de Forcalquier. Emperor Friedrich I "Barbarossa" recognised "Guillelmus Forcalquerii comes" as the direct vassal of the empire by charter dated 21 Dec 1164 [ Juvénis & Albert (1892) Tome III, Appendice, 15, p. 220]. The inhabitants of Champsaur swore homage to "Forcalquerium…Guillelmum comitem filium Bertrandi comitis" by charter dated 12 Sep 1177 [Juvénis & Albert (1892) Tome III, Appendice, 14.III, p. 219].
