Hugh Lovel was the heir of his brother Richard and the son of Henry Lovel. He was of full age when succeeded his brother. He was engaged in the King's service in Scotland in 1268. In 1274, he made an agreement with the Prior of Bruton as to suit at the Prior's Court.

Hugh was summoned to served in person against Llewelyn of Wales in 1277 and 1282. In 1289 he claimed Tintenhull against the Prior of Montacute, but failed.

Hugh married Eleanor, whose parentage is unknown. He died before 21 May 1291. His widow had an order for assignment of dower in Sep. 1291 no to marry without the King's licence. She was living in Mar 1297/8.
