Ranulf
son of Walter gave a carucate of land in Stainton to the priory of Carlisle and lands in Yorkshire to the abbey of Rievaulx. William, son of Ranulf was in possession in 1203 and paid £5 to scutage of that year [Pipe Roll, 5 John] He was returned in one of the inquisitions entered in the Red Book of the Exchequer as holding two vills in demesne and two in homage at the annual corage rent of £4, but he must have died in 1209, for Robert de (Veteri Ponte) Vipont [owned] 500 marks and 5 palfreys in 11 John for having custody of the land and heirs of William son of Ranulf until the said heirs were of age and and for marriage of the heirs, and also for the marriage of Helewise de Stutevill, widow of the said William, the first payment being due at Easter in the eleventh year. Ranulf, Lord of Greystoke, left an heir William (d. 1209) who married Helewise de Stuteville, the relict of William de Lancaster II and of Hugh de Morville, by whom he became the father of Thomas, the ancestor of the Lords of Greystoke [The Ancestor, vol.
