Thomas Payne

"[An examination of the payne entries in Lavenham registers published in the NEHGR, vol. 69, pp. 251-252, shows that Thomas Payne married Agnes Wyat 16 Nov 1561, and had Agnes, baptized 19 Jul 1562, and John baptized 6 Jul 1564. A William Payne had Thomas Baptized 24 Jan 1156, and William was buried in 17 Nov 1587. A Joane Payne, widow was buried 8 Oct 1594. An Agnes Payne was married to George Sergeantson 5 Oct 1565. Finally, William Payne, the father of the emigrants to New England, married Agnes Neves 28 Dec 1584, their children were baptized at Lavenham, and William was buried there 9 Jun 1621. The name Payne is very widely spread in Suffolk, expecially in the southwestern corner of the county; but it seems in the highest degree probable, when the continuity of Boxsted and Lavenham is considered, that William Payne, son of Thomas Payne of Boxsted and Lavenham is conisdered, that (the Testator of 2 Feb 1544/5), had issue William, Thomas, and Agnes (wife of George Sergeantson) who appear in the early Payne entries in the Lavenham registers, that these children are the ones mentioned in the will of Richard Payne of Boxsted (the testator of 13 Jan 1574/5) as "my brother William's Payne's children," and that the William Payne who married Agnes Neves was the great-grandson of Thomas Payne of Boxsted (the testator of 2 Feb 1544/5), being the son of William, who in turn was the son of William, (the brother of Richard) and the Grandson of Thomas of Boxsted.

The Will of Thomas Payne of Boxsted, yeoman, dated 2 Feb 1554/5. "To be buried in Boxsted churchyard. To my wife Alice and my son Richard Payne my lease that I hold of Sir John Cresson, knight, during my wife's life, and afterwards to my said son. To my son John £4. To my son William £8. To my daughter Alice £3. To my son Robert £4. To my goddaughter Magery Fyrmyn 40s at full age. To Richard Wright, Christian Warde, and Ann Slypper, to each 6s. 8d. To my wife Alice £6 13s. 4d. and household goods. Residuary legatees and executors: my wife and son Richard Witnesses: Sir Henry Gascogne, priest, John Paynne, and John Gooddynge."
