There was a William Patten mentioned in records for the county of Somerset, which may be the William Patten who moved to New England. The immigrant, William Patten's name can be found in the Cambridge Town Records including one that is dated 1639 mentions his estate of two parcels, "one house and garden and about half an acres of planting ground."

William married Mary Digbe on 14 Jan 1629/30 in Earls Colne, Essex, England Mary died on 20 Sep 1673 at Cambridge, MA. Their children were:

• Mary Patten, baptized in Earls Colne, Esses, England on 2 May 1632. She married at Roxbury on 11 Nov 1642, John Gibbs
• William Patten, died when he was a child
• Thomas Patten, born in Cambridge, Oct 1636, married, in Dedham, 1 Apr 1662, Rebecca Paine, daughter of Thomas Paine. He married, as his second wife, in Billerica, 20 May 1686, Sarah Kendall Dunton, daughter of Thomas Kendall and Widow of Samuel Dunton.
• Sarah Patten, born in Cambridge on 27 Jan possibly in 1638. She married, after 6 April 1669 (when she is recorded as Sarah Pattin) and befpre 24 Se[ 1667 to Amos Woodward, son of George Woodward.
• Nathaniel Patten, born in Cambridge, 28 Jul 1643. He married, first on 24 Nov 1669 to Rebecca Adams. He married a second time in Cambridge on Oct 24 Oct 1678 to Sarah Cooper.
