John de Fleg, knight, was born about 1165, and succeeded to the family estates in Somerton, Winterton, Sall, etc between 1204 and 1217. The earliest record of him that can be found is as John de Fleg of Norfolk, on a roll dated 60 Oct 1217. [Close Rolls, 2 Henry III, part 2. m. 19] John, son of Henry de Fleg, was a witness to an undated grant from Warine de Sall to Geoffrey de Ponte of 100s in rents from land in Sall. Also by an undated deed, John de Fleg granted to Philip his son, certain lands and rents in Melewde in Sall, to him and the heirs of his body and to be held of said father by the service of rendering a pair of spurs yearly at Michaelmas (29th of September).
John de Fleg was knighted after 1228, and hence forth is called Sir John de Fleg. He is called Sir John de Fleg in records dating in 1234 and 1236. He died about 1236. Sir John de Fleg was married to Margaret de Bassingham, one of the daughters and coheiress of Sir Peter de Bassingham, Kinght. His children were: John (ancestor to Thomas Flagg of Massachusetts), Phillip de Fleg who married Sarah de Sotterley, a widow, and William de Fleg.
